an overnight pulse oximeter test is a good initial screening tool to test for signs of sleep apnea. the blood carries oxygen to your brain, and if the percentage of oxygen in the blood is always above 94% during sleep, then your brain is getting the oxygen during sleep that it needs, and you will likely wake refreshed. the images below are examples of three different patients. this patient slept for 7.5 hours, the lowest oxygen saturation recorded was 91%, and the mean was over 97%.
if the total number of desaturations divided by the total time is 5 or more desaturations per hour, then that is considered mild sleep apnea. the patient had a total of 5 desaturations, and they slept 7.5 hours so the desaturation index is below 1 per hour, which is not a sign of sleep apnea. the patient had a total of 77 desaturations, and they slept 7.5 hours so the desaturation index is about 10 per hour, which is a sign of mild sleep apnea. the patient had a total of 150 desaturations, and they slept 7 hours so the desaturation index is about 21 per hour, which is a sign of moderate sleep apnea. the patient had a total of 265 desaturations, and they slept 7.5 hours so the desaturation index is about 35 per hour, which is a sign of severe sleep apnea.
the standard classification of osa severity was compared with different spo2 and polysomnographic parameters. currently, research is being conducted to identify new tools and parameters to provide greater precision in the diagnostic characterization of the disorder’s severity. in this study, we sought to assess the american academy of sleep medicine (aasm) classification of osa severity by comparing it with various spo2 parameters and psg findings. the mean severity scores of osa are reported in table 1. all spo2 parameters were found to be associated with ahi severity (p < 0.001). the results of this study revealed a direct correlation between the osa severity based on the ahi and spo2 parameters.
when the ahi parameter was adjusted based on the apnea duration and severity of desaturation, the risk ratios of all-cause mortality and cardiovascular mortality were reported to be higher in the moderate and severe osa groups, based on the adjusted ahi parameters, than in those based on conventional ahi. the duration of rem sleep was also found to correlate with the osa severity, although in an inverse relation with osa severity i.e the shorter the rem the worse is osa severity (p≤0.003) [table 3]. the prevalence rate of osa has been shown to increase with age; however, in one study, no correlation with severity was identified. this was a retrospective study and hence an indeterminate amount of selection bias and the potential effects of unknown confounding factors could not be avoided. he declares that he has no competing interests that might be perceived to influence the content of this article.
an overnight pulse oximeter test is a good initial screening tool to test for signs of sleep apnea. a pulse oximeter, put into simple terms, measures the objective: currently accepted guidelines categorize obstructive sleep apnea (osa) severity according to the apnea–hypopnea index (ahi). pulse oximetry, an essential tool in clinical and home sleep testing, is key to diagnosing sleep apnea before nighttime blood oxygen desaturation worsens, normal spo2 during sleep, normal spo2 during sleep, oxygen level 87 while sleeping, sleep apnea oxygen level chart, reasons for low oxygen levels while sleeping.
oxygen desaturation (spo2) u2013 a drop in the level of oxygen present in the blood over a few seconds of time as a result of an apnea event or hypopnea event. people who do not have sleep apnea or any other breathing problems usually have oxygen levels that stay between 93-98% in their blood. osa is typically diagnosed with an overnight sleep study that, among other things, measures your blood oxygen with a pulse oximeter. depending if you are suspected of having a sleep disorder like obstructive sleep apnea, your medical provider may recommend that you undergo overnight sleep apnea is a common nocturnal breathing disorder in which breathing is interrupted numerous times during sleep. these interruptions are, sleep apnea oxygen levels symptoms, how to increase oxygen levels while sleeping.
